Update 3-15-2015- Hamachi changed to Mesh setup so anyone can host. However, I had to delete the old network to create this one, so the Network ID has changed and you need to join the new one:
pw is the same as mod monday
I spend another half day jerking around with Gameranger and Tunngle and was close to reformatting the Win7 machine when I thought why not try Hamachi before doing that.
Well, in summary: works like a charm, painless installation, no ads, no problems on my Win7 hosting box, even after restarting it a few times. Teamspeak and everything else works. Server and client starts are slow because GRAW still tries to call home at Gamespy, but we know that from Gameranger when you crash and restart the client.
So I suggest we test this Hamachi thing today:
download (free and unmanaged client) from here - get the UNMANAGED client on the LEFT side
Then you run the installer. When done, open it up and go to the SYSTEM -> Preferences menu and change a few things under the Settings button:
turn off all interface check boxes (splash screen, hide offline members, enable chat)
and change the Encryption to ANY (because I turned it off on the host - it's probably faster that way)
after you click OK, go and hit the blue power on button and log in to the network called
TGP OGR SERVER
with spaces, all caps.
password is the good old Mod Monday idwic for now, but I will be changing that to one that isn't publicly posted to add some vague security to the thing should we run this on a permanent basis.
There still is no auto-restart of a crashed server, but I am working on remote admin with teamviewer.
I read in some forum thread at some point that this hamachi thing wasn't free any longer. Not sure what they were talking about. Anyone know limitations? I didn't see any and the whole thing seems quite straight forward. The only thing it doesn't have is any public visibility to others who just happen to have the game and hop into your server because they saw it in the big listing on Gameranger or Tunngle.
server is up and running with Snake's recent map cycle.
