Hamachi

Anyone ever try this? http://www.hamachi.cc/

With Hamachi you can organize two or more computers with an Internet connection into their own virtual network for direct secure communication.

Think - LAN over the Internet.

Think - Zero-configuration VPN.

Think - Secure peer-to-peer.

Access computers remotely. Use Windows File Sharing. Play LAN games. Run private Web or FTP servers. Communicate directly. Stay connected.

Might be a great way for some of us sharing files to do it in a simpler manner than tyring ftp's or in some cases **cough** mailing cd's to each other.

Re: Hamachi

yeah but vnc is really meant more for doing things on a remote pc while this is more for just sharing files privately with friends. Vnc for something like this just seems to me to be overkill (especially when I could just use remote desktop).

I bring this up because I feel we really need something like this at tgp wether it be direct connect, this, or something else.

Re: Hamachi

Indeed eternal.. I am open for suggestions.. tell me what everyone wants and I will do my best to make it happen. I have also been looking for a web interfaced chat / private messenging system like we had on the PHPNuke site. But haven't found anything I like for VB. If anyone sees something we may like or can use, let me know. Again I am open for suggestions.

That is what I was shooting for by suggesting this (or direct connect) and unlike limewire using hamachi would/should be VERY secure and private. We also wouldn't be limited on file size or what we share. There is a windows and a linux client and they are EXTREMELY easy to use and setup.
I already got it so anyone who wants to give it a try let me know (of course they would be hosting since I am on dial-up). :)

The only downside I can think of is it goes off already shared directories and you can not designate exactly what you want to share independantly of that.

In that respect maybe direct connect would be better?

Re: Hamachi

OMG this is great!!!!!!!!!!!

A buddy of mine called tonight and asked what torrent site i used. He told me he was looking for a show called deadwood... I just so happened to download both seasons last week.. so I got him on google and talked him through the install, 5 min later we have a connection and he is downloading from me.

Quick easy works great.

Re: Hamachi

A Hamachi network comes with a default capacity of 16members. The restriction is in effect during the betatesting. Please bear with us while we polish the system. Thanks

Re: Hamachi

I have been using Hamachi for a few weeks to play StarCraft with my college buddies as well as hosting some Dungeon Siege 2 games with some online friends.

Hamachi so far has worked well without problems, it also solves the problem for some games where you can't have multiple people behind NAT in the same game.

I like Hamachi so far, the only bad thing is if their system goes down you will not be able to use it since the central server keeps track of the "networks" you create.
