LogMeIn Hamachi

Update 3-15-2015- Hamachi changed to Mesh setup so anyone can host. However, I had to delete the old network to create this one, so the Network ID has changed and you need to join the new one:

288-212-116
pw is the same as mod monday

I spend another half day jerking around with Gameranger and Tunngle and was close to reformatting the Win7 machine when I thought why not try Hamachi before doing that.

Well, in summary: works like a charm, painless installation, no ads, no problems on my Win7 hosting box, even after restarting it a few times. Teamspeak and everything else works. Server and client starts are slow because GRAW still tries to call home at Gamespy, but we know that from Gameranger when you crash and restart the client.

So I suggest we test this Hamachi thing today:

download (free and unmanaged client) from here - get the UNMANAGED client on the LEFT side

https://secure.logmein.com/products/.../download.aspx

Then you run the installer. When done, open it up and go to the SYSTEM -> Preferences menu and change a few things under the Settings button:

turn off all interface check boxes (splash screen, hide offline members, enable chat)

and change the Encryption to ANY (because I turned it off on the host - it's probably faster that way)

after you click OK, go and hit the blue power on button and log in to the network called

TGP OGR SERVER

with spaces, all caps.

password is the good old Mod Monday idwic for now, but I will be changing that to one that isn't publicly posted to add some vague security to the thing should we run this on a permanent basis.

There still is no auto-restart of a crashed server, but I am working on remote admin with teamviewer.

I read in some forum thread at some point that this hamachi thing wasn't free any longer. Not sure what they were talking about. Anyone know limitations? I didn't see any and the whole thing seems quite straight forward. The only thing it doesn't have is any public visibility to others who just happen to have the game and hop into your server because they saw it in the big listing on Gameranger or Tunngle.

server is up and running with Snake's recent map cycle.

Re: LogMeIn Hamachi

I think the $$$ part is clear now - only 5 network members on free version, so server plus 4 players. $29 per year for a 32 member license. Have to think about that after we kick the tires. Probably money better spent than buying a new game.

Re: LogMeIn Hamachi

Once I installed it and pressed the Power my Set Network Location dialog box opened.
It wanted to create e new Network. I chose Home and it created Network 3.
Does that sound correct?
I do see the server in the LogMeIn Hamachi box where I changed the settings you suggested.

Unhappy Re: LogMeIn Hamachi

PC Mag get if 4 of 5 stars last year. The unpaid version like you said limits users but also limits the amount of controls on users.

Hmmmmmm

Re: LogMeIn Hamachi

test on Sunday was very successful. Basically one button to push once set up (takes seconds) and you are on the LAN the server can be found on. Open game, go to Multiplayer, join Lan game and that's all. No ads.

I am buying a license this week once I figure out how to make sure it goes to the client I need to be licensed on the server. Wasn't very clear when I went to the purchase screens while away from my server box today. May even do it tonight

Re: LogMeIn Hamachi

ok, got the license and I think I have it configured properly (hub and spoke network - one hub, many spokes that talk only to server).

it has a much less memorable name and I don't see a way to change it. network to join is called

258-495-243

Mod-Monday password as usual - I have encryption on, compression off. Testing myself to connect next. room for 32 in this for the next 12 months

I'll put together another post of how to get to the game in a different thread.

Re: LogMeIn Hamachi

update on how to download maps (and for Cappy how to check if his Hamachi thing is working):

when connected to the server with Hamachi, right click on the

TGP OGR Server

line in the Hamachi client.

you get a ping" option - and in my case it works from the office, so it should work for all of you. More importantly, there's a "browse" option

after a moment a folder should open and within it there will be a subfolder called "maps" - you can read files from there (the maps are what I use on the server, all of them, not just the active set). If all that works from your client, your Hamachi is working fine.

Related to the use of Hamachi - slow system startup. If you are somewhat familiar with editing system files in windows, here's what I did:

use a text editor with brains (i.e. don't use notepad), so your line breaks are looking properly. Download notepad++ and you won't regret it.

Then download the "hosts" file from this site to make your internet experience suck less:

http://someonewhocares.org/hosts/

in windows, use the first file listed, hosts.txt. Save to downloads folder of your choice. Then go to your newly installed notepad++ and right click on the program to choose "Run as administrator" from the drop down menu (on XP just run it).

once the file is open, add this line to the very bottom:

127.0.0.1 69.10.30.248

that will redirect GRAW trying to talk to gamespy to a localhost black hole and hopefully reduce startup times. The rest of the file will eliminate most ads and trackers from the internet. Some stuff may feel broken, such as sponsored google links, which basically are ads, but for the most part the web still works, just faster and without the BS all sites add to make a buck. Feel free to add sits of your choice, e.g.

127.0.0.1 facebook.com

and you won't ever see that crap again.

now that you have the file ready, go into c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

open the file called "hosts" in there. If you don't see it, use the notepad file open dialog and it will show it, or edit your file manager view settings to show all files, not just known types.

once you have hosts opened (no extension on that file!), copy all the data from hosts.txt into hosts. Then save hosts. Done. You just cut out most BS on the internet and made your browsing safer, plus GRAW will start faster.

Re: LogMeIn Hamachi

FYI, H - I connected with Teamviewer remotely and after changing the in-game mouse sensitivity to minimum, I was able to navigate menus in the game and stop and start sessions. Real careful movements with the mouse is all it takes. It all works, very impressed with Teamviewer. Something like this is a no-go in Remote Desktop.

Re: LogMeIn Hamachi

hmm - trying to get the maps folder up on my XP box asks for a user pass combo. Did no do that on Win7. Should be available to "everyone" - but I suppose I can set up a user.

Re: LogMeIn Hamachi

today no encryption, but compression enabled. Map directory should be open to user "guest" now, which was not enabled as a user before today. have not tried.

did an intense port scan on the server locally and all is open on port 15250:

Warning - geeky stuff below, mostly for Cappy who can't see the server:

If you want to see what your PC can see through Hamachi, go download the Nmap windows binary on http://nmap.org/download.html - it's a great little tool to have to once in a while diagnose your own network for open ports and connected devices (e.g. Cheech leeching internet from Snake, etc)

when you run namp, all you need to enter to see if port 15250 is open through Hamachi are two things - the Hamachi TCP v4 IP for our server box on Hamachi, which you see in your client - 74-soemthing I think), and then in the command line this cryptic line

nmap -sS -sU -p 15250 -T4 -A -v -Pn 74.100.1.100

where you put in the IP you see for the server where I put the 74.100.1.100 - was too lazy to go downstairs and look it up, nor do I want to post it here in public

Let this run for 15 minutes, especially Cappy

you should get something like this back (different IP):
